Schaharazade Halfaoui takes on Channel 4
According to a recent Channel 4 documentary presented by Trevor Phillips, 52% of Muslims do not believe that homosexuality should be legal in Britain, and 24% want Sharia Law.
But many have criticised the ICM survey on which these figures are based for being unreliable. Speaking on Radio 4’s More or Less, Anthony Wells from the blog UK Polling Report pointed out that the only way to carry out such a survey efficiently was to go to a part of London with a high concentration of Muslims, and that this could lead to a more conservative sample than if the survey were carried out in an area where the community was more mixed.
I didn’t have the budget that ICM had. In fact I could only afford to survey one person! But to try and redress the balance a bit, I travelled to a mixed part of west London to speak to the sort of young Muslim who I think represents the people that I know.
