With the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals now underway in London, Seb Kay rounds up the action from the opening day at the O2 Arena.

Jamie Murray & John Peers v Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini

The tournament started well for British fans, as Jamie Murray took to Centre Court with partner John Peers against Australian Open champions Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini. After neither pairing could find a way through to break serve, Murray and Peers took the first set in a tiebreak.

The second set however saw the Italians get an early lead of 3-0, but Murray and Peers got back to 3-4, only to then lose the set 6-3 to take the match to a third set. Just like the first, the final set went down to a tiebreak and despite squandering a match point at 9-8, Murray and Peers managed to edge an 11-9 victory.

Mike Bryan & Bob Bryan v Rohan Boppana & Florin Mergea

The doubles continued with the number-one seeding of Mike and Bob Bryan clear favourites in their opening match. But Rohan Boppana and Florin Mergea provided the first shock of the tournament, claiming five of six service games on the way to the first set, and then earning the only two breaks of the second set, to win 6-4 6-3.

Novak Djokovic v Kei Nishikori

The singles tournament got underway with world number one Novak Djokovic. An expectant crowd were treated to a brief Djokovic masterclass, as he blasted past eighth seed Kei Nishikori 6-1 6-1. Djokovic broke in his first returning game and never looked back as he raced to victory in just 65 minutes.

Roger Federer v Tomas Berdych

To conclude the first day’s play at the O2, Roger Federer began his quest to win a seventh Tour Finals, coming up against Tomas Berdych. The Czech won the first eight points to take a 2-0 lead, but after that didn’t have much luck against Federer, with the Swiss taking the first set 6-4.

The second set was one-sided in the favour of the 17-time Grand Slam champion, as he raced into to a 5-1 lead. Berdych was able to gain a consolation game, before Federer sealed a 6-2 set to end the first match of his 14th consecutive appearance in the season finale on a winning high.
