Barkingside’s week went from bad to worse as Gus Gulfer’s men let a one goal lead slip to lose 1-2 at home to Sawbridgeworth Town.

In a week which saw Barkingside deducted six points for fielding an illegible player, (source: http://m.leaguewebsite.co.uk/unofficialesl/MobileLeagueNews/view/43211), the home side started brightly and took the lead through top goal scorer Luke With after just six minutes. It was the target man’s 14th goal of the season.

With a marginal lead at half time, Sawbridgeworth recouped and managed to turn the deficit around in the second half.

Quick Comeback

Darol Doolan levelled the scores early in to the second half and a screamer from Lewis Deamer just four minutes later turned the game on its head.

Things went from bad to worse for Barkingside as Jason Ajoodha conceded a penalty and was sent off for a second bookable offence. The penalty was poorly taken, although Jack Francis deserves credit for the save with a strong hand to deny the low central kick.

The defeat means Barkingside now drop to 13th ahead of next weekend’s trip to 17th place Enfield.

Promotion Dreams Dashed

Gulfer will be hoping to build up momentum following a tough week for ‘The Side’, having had a mixed start to the New Year. With promotion almost certainly out of sight, good form, gelling and restructuring the team will be Gulfer’s aim heading towards the end of the season and next.

The club’s London Senior Cup tie at Dulwich Hamlet, postponed last week, will now take place on Tuesday February 7.

Sawbridgeworth Town travel to Redbridge in the cup on Tuesday 31st January.

Barkingside: Francis, Ambrose, Birch, Ajoodha, Berkowicz, Conteh, Fontaine, Lee (Ademilyu 70), Ruzgas, With, Wright (Walker-Browne 46). Unused subs: Clifton, Glancy.
