With the Black Panther movie all over the news, I decided to trawl the entertainment landscape for other black heroes.

Pierce Jefferson is Black Panther- Google

Black Lightning is not a superhero that most DC fans will have heard of, but he is now starting to gain some wider recognition, and it’s about time, because Black Lightning was the first African American superhero to appear in DC Comics; as well as the first to have his own series.

He is a metahuman who works as a school teacher but who also has electrical powers that he gained from wearing a technologically advanced super belt. His mission is to protect a crime ridden town called Metropolis. In the series he fights the bad guys on his own at first but gets help from his two teen daughters in future episodes. The character is so good at fighting crime that he is even offered a place within the Justice League after winning praise from Superman and Green Arrow, but he politely rejects the offer as he likes being a solo operator.

With only four episodes currently on Netflix, this exciting crime fighting hero has the potential to help DC take on the Marvel series which is currently getting more views.  I’m not one for DC much, but Black Lightening has definitely captured my attention and I will be keeping in touch with the weekly releases to see where this black hero ends up.

Dandara heorine- Sony

A new black heroine called Dandara was released on PlayStation at the beginning of February. This 3D indie game, which has been remade from other consoles, features Dandara tunnelling through a series of mazes and puzzles to rescue trapped souls from some petty bad guys so that she can save the world.

There is not much dialogue so it doesn’t need a whole lot of concentration to complete the levels, of which there aren’t many. It is more of a fun game with easy puzzles that you could probably solve in two days if you put your all into it.

Dandara is an Afro-Brazilian warrior from the colonial period of Brazil, and isn’t willing to give up easily. She has a unique fighting style and creative method of movement. This is one that fans of indie will enjoy, and only costs £11.99 on the PlayStation store.
