Can Newham End on a High?

With just a few games to go, Joel Blakey looks at Newham Flames handball club's season so far and expectations for the remaining fixtures.

It has been a topsy-turvy season for Newham Flames, and their fate for the season lies in their last three games of the campaign. Win them all and they’ll consolidate second position in the table; lose them all and there will be a huge chance that they will finish bottom of the table.

Season so Far

Their season so far has been mixed to say the least. They’ve had a narrow defeat to Chelsea, in which they will feel they were unlucky. This was coupled with a hammering by Oxford, when they were down the bare bones of the squad. However, the Flames did pick up a victory against Islington, in which the whole team was on song.

Remaining Fixtures

Newham still have all three other teams in the division left to play, starting with an away game to Chelsea, and then two games at home against runaway leaders Oxford, and Islington who they have already beaten this season. Fortunately for Flames, they historically perform better in the run in than they do at the beginning of the season.

They also have some quality players that can make the difference in these tight games. Captain Roy Edmans is their top scorer, and he is confident heading into the run-in, saying that the players have the belief they can beat anybody on their day.

Big Crowd

Flames are also hoping to have a bumper attendance for their final game against Islington. Edmans said: “We want to end the season on a high, if we can get lots of people there it’ll be a very special occasion for us, and hopefully we can put on a performance for all of the people that come and watch us.” Newham play away to Chelsea on Saturday in their next game at 2PM.
