Canary Wharf Sparkles In Winter

Kay Ayed sees the light shining on the Wharf.

Lights

The bright lights of Canary Wharf’s towers already provide quite the spectacle after dark, but that part of East London will glow even more than usual this month thanks to a series of night light displays launched on 11 January and staying all lit up until 22 January.

Highlights on show at Winter Lights 2016 include an 18-foot-tall alien, butterflies made from light and a digitally powered waterfall. Artists from across the globe have contributed a total of 17 sculptures, structures and experiences.

Many of the pieces are interactive and can be controlled using mobile devices or the body of the viewer. One structure is made up of 106 touch-sensitive pods that light up when walked on, which means that the display is a different experience for each visitor.

Much of the festival sheds light on how people communicate in the modern world. A structure entitled ‘my light is your light’ by Palestinian artist Alaa Minawi, explores the plight of Syrian refugees.

Festival curator Keith Watson said:

‘This rich, diverse exhibition of light demonstrates some of the most creative light installations and technology from around the world. These enchanting experiences will appeal to art lovers, families, or simply people looking for something interesting and free to do after work.’
