Cancellation Causes Frustration

The UEL Women’s Badminton team were left sitting frustrated as their match against Canterbury Christ Church was cancelled yesterday, writes Ali Chin.

On the back of an 8-0 defeat to London Southbank, the team were ready to make amends with a performance that they could have been proud of in their final game of the season. But the opposition were unable to field enough players to make a whole team of six.

Team captain Ruth Mwandumba had said “I am excited to play, because it is going to be my last ever game for UEL,” before finding out that the match had been cancelled.

Once it was established that Ruth and her doubles partner Nisha Patel were going to be left without a game, Ruth said: “I am disappointed that we are unable to play as this is the second time they have cancelled.”

Coach John Fielding said: “It is unfortunate they have cancelled as the team were ready”.

Preparation for the match had been good with the girls training on the Monday ready to go for the Wednesday encounter.

This would have been a crucial match to win due to UEL’s league position. While they would not have been able to go above London Southbank on points difference, a win would have maintained their fourth place, rounding off a good end to the season.

At the time of writing UEL are unaware when or if the game will be rescheduled by the BUCS league.
