Removing Labels Attached To The Headscarf

Schahrazade Halfaoui was among those celebrating World Hijab Day earlier this week.

The first of February is World Hijab Day, initiated two years ago by Nazma Khan and designed as a day of celebration to offset the stigmatisation of Muslim women who wear headscarves or veils as a sign of modesty.

As a hijabi woman, I have been subjected to abuse for wearing a headscarf. On one occasion I had a bottle of fizzy drink thrown at me from a bus. Luckily it missed me by a mile. But it brought home to me the need to show the world there is far more to the hijab than the erroneous assumption that Muslim women only adopt it because they have been forced to by their fathers and brothers.

This year’s World Hijab Day was celebrated in 116 countries including the UK.
