Chelsea End Newham hopes

Newham travelled to Chelsea where they had the chance to secure second place in the table. Joel Blakey followed the action.

Newham Flames missed the chance to cement second place in the table falling to a 23-18 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday. This happened despite skipper Roy Edmans putting in a great performance, scoring 10 goals.

Even Start

The game started out fairly evenly, with both teams sharing out the first 12 goals equally, with Rafael Pimento (2), Matthew Pabon, Samuel Newman, Gerard Sanchis (2) on target for the home side, with Alfie Cook scoring as well as Edmans grabbing five of his 10 goals in the opening exchanges.

Game Changer

This was as good as it got for Newham who then conceded four goals without reply, coming from Frederic Bedoin and another three from Sanchis. This quick flurry of goals seemed to take the wind out of Flames’ sails, with their confidence seemingly evaporating with this quick flurry of goals going in.

After a brief lull in the game, the two sides again started to trade goals with Edmans and Somasekaram scoring a couple of goals each for the visitors. However, with their desire to attack Newham left themselves exposed to the counter attack, Sanchis and Newman captitalising on Newham’s vulnerabilities at the back.

‘Disappointing’

Flames goalkeeper said after the game “It must have been a good game for the neutral, but it was a disappointing result for us. We need to learn how to play in better areas, and we need to keep our heads when we go behind. We’ve got a big game coming up against Islington now so we’ll be doing all we can to win that one.”

Newham host Islington in their next game on the 1st April at the Copperbox. It looks like this one will decide who finishes bottom of the table come the end of the season.
