Sam Stringer reports as Colchester lock down key players to extended contracts…

In light of Colchester’s recent revival, the club have been given an extra boost with the contract extensions of several key first team players.

Thursday afternoon saw Tom Eastman, Gavin Massey and Frankie Kent all put pen to paper following Sammie Szmodics who signed his own contract six days earlier.

The news of Tom Eastman signing will be a delight to U’s fans as the experienced defender’s current contract was due to run down at the end of the season.

Since signing from Ipswich in 2011 Eastman has been one of Colchester’s most consistent performers and, as current Player of the Year, a one-year extension was warmly welcomed.

A brace of goals on Saturday from Massey earned Colchester a first home win of the season and now a new contract for the goal scorer. The former Players’ Player of Year is close to a century of appearances for U’s and a new two and a half year contract sees him extend his stay in Essex.

Academy graduate Szmodics netted a hat-trick in the Youth Alliance Cup Final last season, prompting a swift call-up to this first team. Eight appearances so far this campaign has earned the Colchester-born 19-year-old a three-and-a-half-year contract, taking him through to the summer of 2018.

Fellow youngster Frankie Kent has also been rewarded with a three-and-a-half-year contract after an incredible calendar year with the club. Following on from captaining the U18 squad to a league and cup double last season, Kent has fought his way into the U’s first team and is in scintillating form.

All four contract signings will be seen as good business for Colchester as their bright young players commit their futures to the League One club.
