Daggers Draw A Blank

The East London outfit fought out a goalless draw and now face a replay at Morecambe in the FA Cup first round, reports Youcef Dahmani.

Saturday night have been the time for firework displays to ring around the area, but there was a lack of explosive action in a tense and tight game earlier at Victoria Road. Neither side could make the breakthrough but they are both still in the hat for the FA Cup second round draw,

The first half in particular lacked goalmouth action, but there were chances. For the home side Jamie Cureton had a good opportunity in the 19th minute. A defensive error from The Shrimps’ Aaron McGowan was collected by Cureton, however his heavy touch allowed Morecambe’s Barry Roche to come out to clear the ball into safety.

Jake Mulraney went close too. The QPR loanee dribbled his way into the box brilliantly and his shot forced the Shrimps stopper to put the ball out for a corner.

Morecambe’s best chance of the game came in the 32nd minute. Kevin Ellison received the ball in the centre of the box but his shot was blocked. In fact the visitors were unable to register a shot on target in the first half.

The Daggers started brightly after the break. Mulraney made a run from out wide positioning himself for a shot from outside the box, but his attempt was blocked.

Joss Labadie then fired a shot from outside the box after a nice run up field, but the effort went high and wide over the crossbar.

Morecambe’s Alan Goodall had a first-time shot from distance midway through the second half after a defensive mix up in the Daggers defence.

The visitors continued to apply the pressure on the Daggers goal. Lee Molyneux had a shot from distance which Mark Cousins initially struggled with, before he safely gathered the ball at the second attempt.

Justin Hoyte produced the best move of the game as he raced up field to get a clear sight at goal. Roche was forced to make a great save and though Cureton was able to get his head to the rebound, his effort went wide.

Daggers manager Wayne Burnett made a tactical substitution ten minutes before the end, as he brought on youngsters Jodi Jones and Matt McClure for Cureton and Mulraney, but the changes could not effect a decisive impact.

Dagenham now travel to Morecambe on a week Tuesday in a replay, after they face a high-flying Oxford United at home on Tuesday in the Football League Trophy – and still The Daggers are looking for their first home win of the season.
