Delicate, De-liteful, De-lovely

Listening to De Luna, you could have knocked Callum Crumlish down with a feather.

As De Luna floated through their third song, ‘Bones’, a police car drove past the New Cross Inn. Flashing blue lights covered the interior of the room, but the scene in the pub was already too serene for anyone to notice.

I consider it a very rare and momentous occasion when my breath is taken away by a band’s performance…..in a pub. De Luna opened their set with an a cappella song, startling the residents of the New Cross Inn into a daze, and setting the sombre tone for the remainder of their set. Using nothing but an acoustic guitar, a keyboard and two voices, De Luna took control of this watering hole – and they didn’t let go.

The two women who make up the band were met with a reverence that I have never seen live before; to the point where a group of men cheering over a game of pool were ‘shushed’ angrily by members of the audience. Beautiful, delicate melodies and perfect harmonies – even on hard-to-hold long notes – seemed to stop time in this sarf London pub; for 30 minutes at least. To say ‘they owned the floor’ seems trite compared to the truly transcendent character of their performance.

Although there is no obvious structure encompassing their music, De Luna have the power to pour it into your ears, and ensure you won’t forget it. With lyrics like heartbroken lullabies, and subtle chord progressions rising into wonderfully crescendoed choruses, De Luna have it all.

Grab a bottle of wine, put on De Luna, and float across a Sea of Tranquillity.
