Stefan Wright reflects on the women’s first team’s failure this year…

It’s been a struggle for UEL women’s first team this year, as they finished bottom of the league, having failed to pick up a single point, resulting in the side getting relegated to Division 3B.

The season started in October, when they suffered their biggest ever defeat in BUCS, losing 13-0 to Middlesex University.

However, they did progress to the second round of the League Cup, eventually being knocked out by Canterbury Christ Church women 8-0 – their second largest defeat this season.

November saw UEL suffer three more defeats losing 7-1 to King’s College London and 8-0 to Canterbury Christ Church in the cup. Things went from bad to worse as UEL were unable to field a team against the University of Essex, and suffered another crushing defeat after Christmas, losing 6-0 to Universities at Medway. They went on to record more heavy defeats and failed to move up the table.

It was their third consecutive season in the Division 2B, and in all three seasons since their promotion they have finished fourth – until this year, when they scored only five goals and conceded 55 in just ten league games.

Overall, the season was one that they will quickly want to put behind them.
