Dogs Under Attack?

Daiane Ribeiro reports on growing hostility towards ‘man’s best friend’.

Labrador-owner Terry Davies was recently fined £50 for walking his dog without a leash. He claims he has walked Tilly without a leash every day for three years, always in the same park. ‘She’s very docile and doesn’t even bark at people,’ he explained, adding: ‘why should I have her on a leash when this is the only place she can have a run?’ According to Mr Davies, the only time there’s been any trouble is when he was charged for failing to keep Tilly on a leash.

Labradors are generally regarded as docile dogs; Staffordshire terriers have a different reputation. But ‘Staff’ owner Charles Correa insists that his dog loves children and has never show any sign of aggression: ‘Zoey has never, ever been violent. Many people seem scared of her when we go to the park. I guess they must believe everything they read.’

Stories of innocent individuals being mauled by ‘devil dogs’, seem to be having an impact both on people’s attitudes and on the enforcement of local by-laws.
