Jack Ball reports on more managerial movement at Stonebridge Road…

Ebbsfleet United’s former captain and current academy manager Daryl McMahon will take caretaker charge of the team for the second time this season following the sacking of their manager Jamie Day.

Fleet owner Dr Abdulla Al-Humaidi is yet to find somebody that he feels is a suitable long-term replacement for former manager Liam Daish, whose reign lasted eight years.

Day left Conference Premier side Welling United to take over at Ebbsfleet after a four-year spell in charge of the Wings where he led Welling to the Conference South title in 2013 before.

However, the decision to drop down a division to manage Ebbsfleet has proved to be the wrong choice.

Despite Day’s success with Welling, the script at Stonebridge Road could not have been more different. Day lost nine of his 20 league games in charge of the Fleet, drawing four and winning just seven.

Since the turn of the year, the Fleet have won just two league games and there has been little progress under the stewardship of Day. Despite a mid-season change in manager, the club remained in play-off contention but their poor 2015 form has seen the Fleet slip to 9th.

Al-Humaidi clearly has some trust in McMahon, who is also very popular with the fans. After finishing his playing career with the Fleet at the end of last season, McMahon took over for a three-game spell earlier this season where he guided the team to two victories and a draw.

Ebbsfleet have just one fixture of their Conference South season remaining where they host Hertfordshire outfit Bishops Stortford on Saturday.
