Exclusive: Tipping the balance – Michael Muboro

Muboro

Victor Aiwone speaks to the university student – and London Lions star…

London Lions point guard Michael Muboro’s primary concern has always been basketball – but now he has another challenge as he returns to university.

The 23-year-old Custom House resident told Rising East of his desire to make a success out of finishing university while playing professionally.

“I know for a fact it isn’t going to be easy but it is something that has to be done,” says Muboro. “I can’t rely on basketball alone to get me through life, anything can happen, God forbid but I could break my leg tomorrow and not play another game of basketball for as long as I live and won’t have nothing to fall back on. The older I get, the smarter I have to be. It’s all planning and structuring for the future.”

The former St. Bonaventure’s school student is currently in his second year with the London Lions and believes this will be his hardest year yet with having to combine his love for the game with studying for his business and HR management degree at Westminster University.

He adds, “Uni has been crazy this semester, I’ve had so much more reading to do than before, and then there’s training two days a week, team meeting and game day on top of assignments and lectures and seminars. It’s all about getting the balance right and not prioritising one over the other.”

But the point guard is enjoying it so far and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

“Next year will be a lot harder,” he admits, “as I will be in my final year of uni but for now we’re doing well in the league and I have been getting decent enough marks with my work and I have been averaging 18 points a game so I can’t complain.

“I just need to keep focused and make sure basketball doesn’t affect my dream of a uni degree and my uni degree doesn’t affect my dream of winning a league championship.”

Hopefully that dream of a university degree and league championship isn’t too far off this East London-born lad.
