Charlton were empathic winners as they cruised to a 5-1 victory over Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium.

Caretaker-manager Kevin Nugent spoke after the game and lauded his team’s performance, “We’re really pleased. They’re (Bristol Rovers) a good side who have had double promotions and they never give up, so it was always going to be a big test for us, but we came through it and we’re very pleased.”

The Addicks went 1-0 up scoring on the 26th minute when a shot from forward Ademola Lookman was deflected past Bristol keeper, Kelle Roos.

Before the first half came to an end, Josh Magennis doubled the lead for Charlton in the 44th minute with a shot from close range, bagging himself his second goal in consecutive games.

Second Half

Charlton began the second half with the same relentless pressure as the first. It appears as though they’ve added a new tactic to their weaponry under caretaker manager Kevin Nugent.

The pressure once again proved too much for the opposition when Patrick Bauer’s header from Lookman’s corner sailed passed Roos to make it 3-0 inside the 50th minute mark.

Dream Debut

The scoreline got even worse for the home side as debutante, Adam Chicksen scored his first goal in Charlton colours to make it 4-0 in the 77th minute. With an assist already in this game, it’ll be one to remember for Chicksen.

Despite a 4-0 lead Charlton continued hunt for more goals in the latter stages of the match and scored their fifth of the evening, their seventh in two matches, when Nicky Asoje curled a 20-yard shot into the bottom corner with six minutes left to play.

The South-East London side almost completed a perfect performance but Bristol Rovers won a penalty following a foul on Rory Gaffney from academy graduate Dillon Phillips in the Charlton net.

Bristol Rovers’ top scorer Matt Taylor stepped up to convert the spot kick to give the home side the tiniest of consolations.

‘Progression’

This was Charlton’s highest scoring result since their 6-0 demolition to Barnsley in 2013.

The three points means that Charlton rise up to 11th in the League One table, their next game see’s the South-East London side face Sheffield United, who they’ll face at The Valley on Saturday.

Speaking about whether his unbeaten run as caretaker-manager has made the job easier for an incoming manager,  Nugent said, “Easy is the wrong word, because it isn’t an easy job, but it is a good job and it’s better than it was because the team has shown progression.”
