Five Star UEL Leaves Ladies In Touching Distance

A four-goal haul from Otesha Charles and another from Katie O’Donnahue has UEL women’s football 1st team on the brink of the league championship, as Tekena Ibanichuka reports.

UEL women's football

UEL women’s first team secured yet another crushing win at Hackney Marshes with a 5-0 win over third-placed Buckinghamshire New University 1st team. The win sees UEL move on to 21 points, eight points clear of second placed LSE women’s 1st team with three games to go.

UEL started the match very quickly hoping to impose themselves on their visitors, and it paid off as they had raced into a two-goal lead inside the first 13 minutes with a quick fire brace from Otesha Charles.

Hoping to overtake LSE in the league table, BUCS did manage to settle, momentarily stopping the rot. However, UEL remained comfortable in the first half. Their patience was rewarded on 39 minutes when Charles completed her hatrick to give the hosts a three-goal lead at the break.

Rifling

Having gained control of the match, the second half was rather subdued for UEL who were relatively untroubled. They did extend their lead further on 63 minutes with Katie Donahue getting in on the act, rifling in a shot from just outside the area to make it 4-0.

From there onwards the match did go up a gear in terms of drama. As UEL went in search of more goals, they were encamped inside the BUCS half. Captain Lili Maple came close to adding to UEL’s lead on 71 minutes but could only see her shot crash off the cross bar.

UEL did get their fifth goal of the day however on 79 minutes in rather comical fashion. Following a defence-splitting pass from Chantelle Campbell, it was a straight race between Charles and BUCS defender Georgia Reid which Charles won, dispatching the ball into the net. However, in an attempt to deny Charles the glory of claiming her fourth goal, Reid vigorously tried to claim the goal as her own goal much to the bemusement of those around her, and ultimately to no avail.

Straight red

If trying to claim an own goal seemed a little on the embarrassing side, things would only get worse for Reid as she was given a straight red card in the dying stages of the match. Following a 50-50 clash with Molly Concepcion, Reid kicked out at Concepcion, resulting in a minor scuffle between the two sets of players. Reid was given her marching orders.

Despite the chaotic end to proceedings, it was still yet another successful match for UEL women’s 1st team and with only a few games left, they are on the brink of securing the championship.
