Katy Sharp-Watson previews East London’s alternative film festival.

Admittedly, the BFI London Film Festival is the big one, with 248 films showing in 17 London venues; but many of its screenings are now sold out, and the remaining seats cost up to £25. However, there is an alternative, and it’s in East London.

Running from 17-26 October, the London Fields Free Film Festival is curated by volunteers and all screenings are completely free of charge.

A mix of documentaries, animations and shorts will be shown at various venues across Hackney. Highlights include Under the Crane (showing at St John’s Hospice, 7.30pm on 20 October), based on Michael Rosen’s poem ‘Hackney Streets’.

The film mixes new footage with previously unseen archive material in a lyrical presentation of Hackney’s history and the challenges it faces.
