Oliver Rudgewick reports on a local racer’s weekend of mixed fortunes

Rainham’s Rob Guiver is still in the hunt for the Ducati Tri Options Cup in spite of a disappointing first race at Silverstone at the weekend.

Guiver went into the penultimate round of the championship knowing that he had to win at least one of the races at Silverstone to have a serious chance of staying in the fight for the championship.

The 30-year old started the weekend strongly by finishing second fastest in the practice session and then qualified in second on the grid for the opening race.

However, the start did not go to plan, as Guiver dropped back to fifth following a poor opening lap.

He struggled to make his way back into podium contention and finished a disappointing fifth.

The 30-year old put himself in a good position to challenge for race two, as he qualified on the front row in third place.

Guiver got off to a good start, staying in third place going through the first corner at Copse. On lap four, Guiver launched his attack and started lap five in the lead.

The advantage was short lived as Robbie Brown soon overtook Guiver, forcing him to run out wide and drop down to third place.

Guiver failed to find a way back in the closing stages of the race and had to settle for third.

The result sees Guiver third in the rider’s championship, 36 points behind leader Robbie Brown going into the final race at Brands Hatch.

With 50 points still on offer from the last race weekend, the title is still a possibility for Guiver. But, there will need to be a special performance from Rainham’s man in order to claim the crown from current leader Brown.
