Muslims In A Secular World

Before Friday prayers, Muslim congregations first listen to a sermon or khutba delivered by the leader of the prayers.

At the East London Mosque in Whitechapel, a khutba was recently issued entitled ‘The Best of Communities’ in which the preacher addressed ‘the roles and the responsibilities of the Muslim community’, particularly in a wider, secular society.

The East London Mosque was built in 1910.

In Islam, Friday is considered to be the holiest and best day of the week – the day when Muslims, both male and female, gather at their local mosque for the congregational prayer, known as Jummah.
