How Green is My Way?

Will the Greenway ever become My Way?

The Greenway is a walk and cycle path stretching for seven kilometres mainly through the Borough of Newham. It was established 20 years ago in an attempt to increase wildlife and encourage more ‘green’ activity in the area.

I live in Newham, but as I grew up here the Greenway is the last place I would have wanted to find myself in. Since its inception in the 90s, the Greenway has garnered a reputation as a place for litterers, alcoholics and a few stabbings for good measure.

However, to tackle this issue, Newham Council proposed to make improvements across the Greenway in the form of new lights and security cameras. After a test run back in March 2016, the local authority went ahead with plans to install such improvements throughout the whole Greenway by the end of this month.

I visited an updated section of the Greenway to see for myself how much it had improved. I’ll admit I’m genuinely too afraid to travel through there at night, but daytime should paint the Greenway in a ‘greener’ light… right?
