Humans of East London

Inspired by the Humans of New York series by photographer Brandon Stanton, in which pictures of New Yorkers are accompanied by direct quotes, Kawther Ayed and Jonathan Tagle seek to capture some of the humanity around East London.

“What’s your favourite thing about her?” “She’s crazy. And I can tell her anything and she won’t judge me.” – Tara. “This one time we were playing on the monkey bars, and this kid challenged me to play. The aim of the game is to pull each other down from the legs. And this kid thought it was funny to pull down my pants whilst I was on the monkey bars. I lost, obviously. And then I asked to go home early. My childhood stories are always embarrassing.” – Izzy.

“Just be yourself, and don’t let other people put you down, and don’t think about your tomorrow – think about your today. Tomorrow might not be here.” – Shajeda. “Always smile and appreciate what you have.” – Anita.

“Just embrace the moment. There’s always so many little things that we are afraid of in life. We are afraid to do what we want because we’re afraid of other people’s perception of us. So I’d just say embrace the moment and have confidence in yourself.”
