In-Form UEL Face Essex

Alistair Chin reports on UEL's up coming fixture against their local rivals.

The University of East London face Essex University in their last match of 2016 as the Christmas break approaches. UEL come into Wednesday’s game in great form after a 7-1 victory against Medway last week. With Essex University losing 8-0 in their last game, UEL are clear favourites to get the victory.

Return of International star

This is the second time UEL are facing Essex in the league this season as UEL came out 6-2 winners in their first meeting, with Azhar Syed making his debut in this fixture. Unfortunately, he won’t be available for the return fixture but Sean Wilson will be ready to go after competing in the Welsh Open, where he represented Jamaica. UEL will be looking to still put out a strong team to overcome their opponents this week.

Captain Ali Chin has fully recovered from his injury and will be able to partner with Alvin Lee once again. They stand a great chance of earning doubles points this week. Another positive is that Josh Teoh has fully recovered and has been training hard this week to earn his place within the team.

With UEL having a game in hand, the pressure is on the East London side to keep pace with the league leaders Kings, who Essex played last week and were comfortably beaten by, in an 8-0 reverse. All the pressure will be on UEL to perform and get the win, but will they be able to do it? UEL sit in second place and undefeated, this will be a good opportunity to get the victory and continue to crank up the pressure on Kings.

As Essex didn’t gain any points last week against Kings, they do not come into Wednesday’s game in the best form, but Essex will be looking to spring a surprise. As this is the last game before the Christmas break, both sides will want to go into the break on a positive.
