Independent on Sunday editor Lisa Markwell visited the Rising East newsroom on 4th February to talk about the priorities for young journalists today. She discussed the role of women in the profession, and what sort of coverage to give organisations such as Islamic State (IS). Following the murder of Japanese hostage Kenji Goto by IS, the Independent on Sunday refused to publish the story on the front page, and Markwell said she would never publish images from IS videos ‘under any circumstances’. She also described the lack of female editors on national papers as ‘a scandal’, and insisted that women journalists should make up at least half of the workforce. Ferdia Carr
