James Bond Comes To Canary Wharf

Coinciding with the spectacular UK release of SPECTRE, Everyman Cinema has the license to host an exclusive exhibition, ‘The Name’s Bond’.

For one month only, Canary Wharf’s luxury picture house is offering a thrilling tour through the entire franchise of 24 Bond films, featuring previously unseen items from 007’s life story and re-visiting iconic moments that made us fall in love with the many faces of James Bond.

On SPECTRE release day Tom Hedley brought back these pictures from the exhibition.

The 120-metre set used to create the lair for SPECTRE was one of the most ambitious projects of its time. With the help of 250 artists, designer Ken Adam took six months to build what became the biggest set in Britain. Starring Sean Connery, You Only Live Twice was the first Bond film to be directed by Lewis Gilbert. The villain of the piece, Enrst Stavro Blofeld, played by Donald Pleasance, was later parodied in the shape of Dr Evil (Mike Myers) in the Austin Powers series.

Following Sean Connery’s retirement from the Bond franchise, largely unknown actor George Lazenby took up the reins to star in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, directed by Peter Hunt. According to reports from the Daily Mirror, Lazenby turned up to the Leicester Square premiere looking ‘very un-Bond-like’ sporting a beard and shoulder-length hair. His replacement as Bond was the super-suave Roger Moore.

Bond’s unforgettable portfolio of catchy one-liners is arguably why the franchise has been so successful.

Possibly the most memorable line of them all was introduced in Dr. No (1962). Seated opposite Sylvia Trench at a cards table in Le Cercle at Les Ambassadeurs, an up-market gambling club, Sean Connery makes his ‘immortal introduction’ for the first time: ‘Bond, James Bond’.

Bond’s famous instruction for mixing a martini – ‘shaken, not stirred’ – was also introduced in Dr. No.

The Aston Martin DB5 was used throughout the decades with Bond behind the wheel. The model that Connery drove in Goldfinger sold for £595,100 this year. But even this is a paltry sum compared to the £24m worth of cars reportedly written off in high-speed pursuits and jaw-dropping stunts during the making of SPECTRE.

SPECTRE is now on full release nationwide.
