Lapslie: ‘Watford Are Worthy Winners’

Captain George Lapslie spoke with Harvey Clare this week after Charlton Athletic U18’s just failed to win The Professional Development League 2 – South.

If could have been a monumental achievement for Steve Avory’s side to win back-to-back championships but the South-East London U18s side finished just five points lower than Watford.

At the start of the next year, the Addicks’ were running away with the league and 10 points clear at one point.

Form dropped in late February as Charlton only managed to win three, draw three and lose two of their remaining eight fixtures. During this rough period of time, it’s clear this is where the league was lost.

But George Lapslie, the U18s captain praised the champions Watford.

“Credit where credit is due, Watford went from the 1st of January to the end of the league season winning every game and conceding zero goals, so they were the worthy winners.”

Hoping

As to his own team, the midfielder said: “The season went very well despite the ending of the campaign. We are just hoping to go one step further than them and win the National Finals as we did so last year”

The National Finals is a knockout competition where the winners and runners up of The Professional Development League 2 North and South table face each other. As Nottingham Forest won the North league, Lapslie’s side will play them in the semifinal.

It’s been a tough year for Charlton with the first team relegated amid ongoing supporter protests against the owners. So does Lapslie think that it will this affect the youth set up in anyway? “No I don’t think it will affect the youth team. It is a good strong set up and I think that the main strengths within the youth setup is the clear pathway there is into the first team.”

“As sad as it is that we have been relegated into league one, it will undoubtedly present more opportunities for us youth.”
