Late Strike Maintains Addicks Unbeaten Run

An extra time strike from Mikhail Kennedy earns Charlton U23s a 2-1 victory against a determined Watford as Kwame Kufuor reports.

The rain made for a damp game, but a despite going behind early in the second half Charlton fought back right until the last minute to produce a win.

Charlton enjoyed most of the possession during the wet first forty-five minutes, but were unable to capitalise before half-time. Five minutes into the second-half and the deadlock was broken courtesy of Ogo Obi who gave Watford the lead.

The Addicks in-form striker, Karlan Ahearne-Grant, who had been kept quiet by the Watford defence, throughout the whole afternoon suddenly came to life, and scored to level the game for Charlton.

Jason Euell’s, tactical substitution on the 89th minutes paid off. Substitute Louis Yamfam managed to find Mikhail Kennedy with a well calculated pass which he fired home from close range for the winner.

The win, keeps the Addicks’ on top of the PDL2 South and helps extends their unbeaten run to 11 matches.

On the cold muddy pitch, the first chance of the game arrived on the 22- minute mark. Archie Edwards and Ahearne-Grant combined well inside the Hornets half, before releasing to Josh Umerah, who’s shot was deflected for a corner.

Ahearne-Grant, had the last kick of the game when his free-kick went over the bar for a goal kick. Both teams went into the break in a stalemate.

The Hornet, took the lead immediately after the break. A short back pass from Edward Archie to his keeper allowed Obi to squeeze in on goal and rounded Ashley Maynard-Brewer before driving to the top left corner.

Jason Euell’s side mounted continuous pressure on Watford, which eventually paid off in the 57 minute. A well-weighted pass from George Lapslie to Charles- Cook, became a through ball Ahearne-Grant who set his sights on goal and slotted his shot in to the back of the net to draw level at 1-1.

Watford came close again, when Dion Perrera broke down the right and crossed for Obi, who’s low strike hit the outside of the post.

The scores were still levelled, as the match entered the closing stages, but the introduction of Yamfam. changed the game. The substitute put Kennedy through on goal, and he fired the ball into the net to secure a well-deserved three points for the Addicks.
