Macdevitt on the attack

Moses Kaddu looks back at the eventful UEL football 1st Cup match and the in-form right back Liam Macdevitt…

Hat-trick hero Liam Macdevitt admitted that he preferred a more attacking position within the team, after his goals assisted UEL 1st into the last 16 of the BUCS Cup.

“For me personally I’ve always been a striker and that’s where I think I’m best, but I love football so where ever I need to play ill play and hopefully do a job”.

Macdevitt this season has played right back in his introduction straight into the UEL 1st but Abidou has seen his goal scoring potential and pushed his further up field – which has come to fruition.

Their respective opponents Cardiff 1st were also top of their regional league in the Western division as they both clashed for the first time.

Yassain Abidou’s side managed to take their excellent league form into the Cup tie, as they defeated the University of Cardiff 4-2.

Never gave up

UEL reversed an early two goal deficit at half-time with thanks to a tactical change that saw Macdevitt move to a more forward role and score himself a hat-trick to secure UEL’s place in the next round

The East London side currently sit top of their league after promotion last season, into the top Southern East division.

UEL were in charge for large periods of the match, as coach Abidou reiterates: “We pretty much dominated this game from 0 to 90 minutes, they had two chances and got two goals against the run of play”.

UEL showed their character and determination to come from behind, with home advantage and only one defeat so far this season which came away from home – Hackney Marshes is becoming a fortress for the firsts.

Macdevitt has been the stand out performer for UEL so far this season, with a brace in their last league outing to secure the three points for UEL.

“From a personal position obviously I’ve moved forward the last few games and five goals in the last two games isn’t so bad” said Macdevitt.

UEL now look to their next league match with a trip to the University of Brighton 1st who currently sit fourth, in search to maintain their great start to the season.
