Manager Harris elated after Millwall romp past U’s

Chopper has expressed his joy after the Lions stretched their unbeaten run to nine games with a comprehensive win against Colchester, writes Ben Smith.

Millwall manager Neil Harris is thrilled with how the Lions performed in their 4-1 triumph over Colchester United on Saturday, but acknowledges that improvements can still be made.

A goal from Lee Gregory, two from Shane Ferguson and a late Byron Webster effort helped secure the points for Millwall who are now just two points off the play-offs with a game in hand.

Lions roaring up the table

The Lions haven’t been beaten since October 3, and have scored 12 goals in their last three outings.

Harris, whose side are gathering momentum before a busy winter period, told Millwallfc.co.uk:

“I’m delighted with the goals we scored. I thought we could have had a few more. Fred [Onyedinma] had one blocked, George [Saville] had one blocked and the keeper made two very good saves. We were also very close from a couple of set-plays where we just didn’t quite get on the end of the ball.

“Quality in the final third was key. I think Tony [Humes] will be disappointed that his defenders have made a couple of errors but you have still got to have the ability to capitalise on those errors. I think our front four players certainly had that ability today.

“We were eight unbeaten before the break and we were really good at times and finished with a brilliant performance at Plymouth. The challenge (to the players) was can you do it again today and they certainly answered that challenge.”

Harris the perfectionist

While Millwall have been irresistible going forward in November, their defence hasn’t been as solid as Harris would like, and Chopper expressed his discontent at the fact that they conceded their fifth goal in three games on Saturday.

He added: “I’ve just said to them, as good as we were in spells today we can be better than that and I’m disappointed we didn’t get a clean sheet, so I told them.

“The good teams win the next game, that’s my belief. We have a tough trip on Tuesday night against Fleetwood, a team who had a good result today.”

The Lions could find themselves in the top six if they overcome 19th-placed Fleetwood Town midweek and other results go their way.
