Millwall See Off Wasteful Barnsley

Sam Stringer and Mark Ferguson watched Millwall claim a vital victory.

Millwall 1 – 0 Barnsley

Millwall ground out a much needed win at the New Den sending home frustrated fellow strugglers Barnsley who are still searching for their first away victory of the season.

The Tykes failed to take advantage of several good chances before the game was decided by Scott Wiseman’s 77th minute own goal.

The result lifted Millwall up to 17th in the Championship, while Barnsley are just two points above bottom placed Yeovil.

The first clear-cut chance of the game came on 28 minutes when Millwall’s Richard Chaplow crossed from the right and found Scott McDonald unmarked in the middle, but the Australian striker scuffed his shot.

The visitors then put together the best move of the half. Paddy McCourt linked up well with Marcus Pedersen and carved a route through the Millwall defence to put Jacob Mellis through. With the goal at his mercy Mellis somehow hit straight at David Forde.

As the game headed towards half time, the hosts started to assert themselves and debutant Guy Moussi squandered a good chance.

Barnsley started the second half positively and began to commit men forward. A minute after the break Jim O’Brien picked out Mellis at the back-post and his header was deflected just wide.

Lions manager Steve Lomas was first to make chances with Chaplow and McDonald making way for Steve Morison and Liam Feeney who both played significant parts in the remaining stages of the game.

Jack Butland came up with a world class save to deny Morison who met a low cross at the far post with around 15 minutes to go. The Barnsley keeper looked unbeatable but the celebration was short lived.

Just two minutes later substitute Feeney found enough space to float a cross which Robinson flicked on. The ball ricocheted off Wiseman’s head and into his own goal.

Millwall defended resiliently in the last quarter. Their much needed victory puts them six points ahead of struggling Barnsley.
