Music In The Air

Martista Rodríguez Villar explains why she swapped Madrid and a job in advertising for the London music scene.

‘I just wanted to discover different places, ways of life, meet people from around the world, practice English and open my mind a bit more. At the beginning I was thinking about going to Los Angeles, but I found it more difficult. London is less than two hours from Spain, which helps. Also, I had friends living here, so it was easier to get started.

‘All my life I’ve been surrounded by music, but London is where I finally realised that I wanted to work with music. I started off as a dancer, but now I produce music and DJ.

‘People are more open minded here… it’s a kind of music they don’t understand in Spain. There are lots of opportunities, but there’s also more competitiveness.

‘The best thing about London is to go to a great concert, see a great show and get crazy in a bar with cool music. Everything is happening in London, most of the biggest record labels are here. There’s a chance to be part of it all.

‘My first experience of London was Shoreditch. I was astounded by the atmosphere in the rooftop restaurants. It was amazing to have young creative people right next to business people – a perfect introduction to London.

‘It’s easy to become good friends with people here. Londoners are very open to meeting new people, and they are very used to it. We all come from different cities and countries … they’ll treat you like one of them. I was very surprised by the fact that they are so friendly!

‘The biggest difference between Spain and England is the weather. We spend more time in the streets. Also, it’s a food culture in Spain, which you won’t find here. I miss the food, simple and natural food. I miss seeing the sun everyday, and I miss my family and friends.’

‘I’ve lived in London for two and a half years now. And hopefully many more! I’m learning all the time, and I can listen to nice music everywhere – in a shop, restaurant, even in the street.’
