Perhaps the target audience was simply exhausted after all the exertions of Valentine’s Day. Or maybe Fifty Shades of Grey is really a global suburban phenomenon which doesn’t play so well in inner city areas. Either way, this Sunday showing in Stratford was somewhat short of a full house, and the attendance considerably lower than suggested by first day UK box office figures of £4.6m (unless, of course, hundreds of ticket holders were throwing their tampons in the toilet while the trailers were on).
