Oliver Rudgewick reports on the Team GB cyclist set to get behind the wheel in the Race of Champions.

Paralympic cyclist Jon-Allan Butterworth will return to the Olympic Park in November for the Race of Champions Skills Challenge.

Butterworth won three silver medals in the 2012 Paralympics, but will be facing an entirely different challenge later this month.

The Race of Champions Skills challenge involves competitors driving cars and taking on a variety of tests including negotiating an obstacle course and carrying out parallel parking.

Speaking to the Race of Champions website Butterworth said “I have always been a fan of speed so I’m really looking forward to giving the ROC Celebrity Skills Challenge course a try.”

Olympic Legends Sir Chris Hoy and Sir Ben Ainslie, and MOBO award winner singer songwriter Ella Eyre are also competing in the event. More stars will be confirmed closer to the date.

After his success at the previous games, Butterworth is already looking forward to Rio next year.

Butterworth had his left arm amputated after being injured in an insurgent missile attack while serving with the RAF at Basra Air Station in 2007.

He took part in a Help for Heroes cycle ride in 2008, and he was quickly identified as a potential Paralympic talent by British Cycling.

With funding from Help for Heroes, Butterworth trained for the London 2012 Paralympics games.

Butterworth qualified for Team GB and was hugely successful, winning three silver medals in the C4-5 1km Time Trial, C5 Individual Pursuit and C1-5 Mixed Team Sprint with Darren Kenny and Rik Waddon.
