Popping In For Fish And Chips

Cod comes well battered in the street behind Brick Lane, reports Emma Brand.

The Brick Lane area is best known for curries – and before that, kosher. But if you want something old-style English, go to Poppies Fish & Chip Restaurant & Takeaway, just a couple of minutes’ walk from the Lane near the end of Hanbury Street.

The restaurant has vintage décor, complete with a 1940s style jukebox. The friendly staff, known as ‘Poppettes’, are dressed in wartime outfits to match the music machine.

We went for cod and chips, served in boxes printed with wartime headlines. At £8.50 for a large portion, it was good value. The cod came in a perfectly crisp batter, and the chips were cooked just right.

Besides fish and chips, there is also a selection of chicken meals, pies, pasties and sausages, along with soft and alcoholic drinks.

At the National Fish and Chip Awards, Poppies was  recognised as the Best Independent Fish and Chip Restaurant in the UK – and I can see why.
