Steve Wallbridge reports on darts’ showcase event…

The Premier League’s finals night is fast approaching with Phil Taylor, Raymond van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis set to battle it out for that crucial fourth place to book their place at the O2 arena in London on May 21.

Michael van Gerwen and Dave Chisnall have already secured their places in this year’s final and the current world champion Gary Anderson looks to have done enough to join them.

Therefore that leaves only one place left for which Taylor, van Barneveld and Lewis will be fighting over the coming weeks.

‘The Power’ currently leads the trio with 13 points, while Barney and Lewis are neck and neck on 12 points.

The fixtures leading up to finals night make for interesting reading. Barney, Taylor and Lewis all have to face Anderson, who will be determined to keep his place in the top four and not become embroiled in the battle.

Lewis and Barney will go head to head in a huge clash on April 30, with the result having a big impact on the race for fourth spot.

Van Gerwen could prove to be a stumbling block for both Taylor and Lewis, with both having to play the table topper. The world number one and favourite to win the Premier League could put a serious dent in their hopes to make it to the finals.

Stephen Bunting and James Wade, who are seventh and eighth respectively in the Premier League table, have little chance of making it to the finals after being cut adrift from the pack.

Bunting and Wade are both on 10 points, each having played 13 games, meaning Barneveld and Lewis both have a game in hand over them.

It would take a very poor run of results from Barney, Lewis or Taylor for Bunting or Wade to have even the slightest chance of pinching fourth place.

The battle for fourth place is well underway and will set up what promises to be an unforgettable night at London’s O2 Arena.
