Remembering Jo Cox

16 June 2016 saw a horrific attack

on a mother, a wife, a daughter, a person

That resonated through British media

The news seeping into the hearts of the nation

She was defenceless in the face of blind patriotism

Blind to the meaning of the mourners who would come after

Their suits, the hijabs, and turbans

The posters wrapped in plastic

The black felt tip words scrawled on them:

“Far More Unites Us Than Divides Us”

His was the fear of the unknown

The eagerness to ‘take our country back’

But now it’s on him that his country has turned its back
