Remembrance Day: Observing The Tradition

In a world of change and churn, how many people took time to Remember?

When the clock strikes 11 on 11 November, voices are meant to hush, feet halt and heads drop in solemn remembrance of all the soldiers who died and the Armistice which brought the First World War to an end in 1918.

I sent reporters out to capture this moment and to see how many people carry on this tradition.

In a fast-changing world where everyone is constantly hurrying, we wanted to observe what happened when silence was called for. Would people stop? Would they stay silent? Would they even care?

Canary Wharf Underground station was one of the areas we looked at, since its human traffic is normally relentless.  We also filmed at Islington Green Park, Woolwich shopping centre and Beckton Park Asda.

The most poignant moment in the footage is when an old man with his walking stick stops in the station, while everyone around him rushes by, not bowing their heads or stopping to acknowledge his act of remembrance.

People may Tweet #LestWeForget, but how many have forgotten? Our short film suggests that some of us already have, while others are determined to remember.
