Slade Sacked

Following a 3-0 defeat to Swindon Town on Saturday, Russell Slade becomes the fifth managerial sacking for Charlton since January the 11th 2015, as Harvey Clare reports.

The news of Slade’s sacking comes as a shock as it seemed that The Addicks was starting to hit a run of form prior to the Swindon defeat, as Slade’s men where unbeaten in their last six fixtures, which included a 3-1 FA Cup win against Scunthorpe.

Downhill Battle

Slade was appointed the Charlton job just five months ago in June and it’s been quite simply a downhill battle ever since. He started off his Charlton campaign with back-to-back defeats to Bury and a English Football League Cup defeat to Cheltenham.

Slade then went through the whole of September without a win, picking up just four points out of a possible 15. Since then, Charlton has played nine games and have won three.

Club Statement

Following the dismissal of Slade, Charlton made a statement on their website:

“The club has reluctantly made this decision after results this season, which have left the team occupying 15th place.

“The club wants to give itself the best possible opportunity of achieving its number one priority – winning promotion to the Championship at the earliest opportunity.

“The club would like to thank Russell for his tireless work during his time at The Valley, particularly the processes and disciplines he has instilled at the training ground, and wishes him well for the future.”

There was no comment on what the next step will be in terms of finding a new manager.

Assistant manager Kevin Nugent will most likely take charge against Port Vale this weekend.
