Sol Set To Sign For Tories?

Martin Voller wonders whether we will soon see Sol Campbell kitted out in true blue.

Former Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur defender Sol Campbell could be set for a career in politics after hinting that he will stand for selection as the Conservative candidate for Kensington.

Campbell may replace Sir Malcolm Rifkind MP who is standing down in May amid ‘cash for access’ allegations.

The Plaistow-born England international has become increasingly vocal about British politics since his retirement from football in 2011. Campbell has previously shown an interest in running for London Mayor.

Asked if he was thinking of standing in the general election, Campbell told the Sky News Murnaghan programme: ‘Step by step. I think about a lot of things.’

The 40-year-old claims he has a lot to offer, but is he really the most suitable candidate?

Campbell has excellent leadership skills, having captained numerous clubs, including leading Portsmouth to FA Cup success in 2008.

But I’m not sure I would want him representing my local area. While I understand we all have to start somewhere, my vote would have to go to the person with the most experience – someone who knows for sure what they are doing.

The Kensington seat is a safe one for the Tories, so Campbell would have to work overtime to lose it! With this in mind, news of his prospective candidacy begins to sound more like a political stunt – something like Harriet Harman’s pink bus, only this one’s for the lads.

World football’s governing body could do with some sorting out. If you’re keen to get stuck in, why not focus your attention on that, Sol?
