Spelling Fascist In The IT Crowd

Emma Brand is impressed with Richard Ayoade’s strict adherence to the rules of grammar.

Richard Ayoade is most famous for playing the hilariously geeky Maurice Moss in the hit show, the IT Crowd. He has also directed films such as Submarine, and presented shows such as Gadget Man and Travel Man. He keeps up his geeky persona on social media.

Combined with love for correct grammar, his geeky side definitely comes out in some of his recent Tweets, for example, when he says “sorry for rogue autocorrect apostrophe”.

In a social media world where most people just don’t bother with grammar, it is good to see a minority maintaining high standards!

Some of Richard’s other recent Tweets are more funny than geeky: “When exactly did Coldplay start dressing like some kind of in store security team for All Saints? I need an actual date.” Unfortunately, no one managed to come up with one.

Richard has also been using Twitter to get local news from his 416k followers. “Hello. Is there any news w/r/t the threatened closure of the Carnegie library in Herne Hill?” This time he did get a reply, with someone telling him about a protest against the closure.

He is clearly proud of Submarine, which marked his debut as a film director. He Retweeted: “Today’s recommendation is ‪@RichardAyoade’s first feature, Submarine. Watch now: ‪http://bit.ly/1nfrC3t  ‪#BFIPlayer”

There are also some more questionable tweets, including “As far as I’m concerned, golf is still illegal.”

‘Illegal’? Is that geeky or just plain wrong?
