Spirited Romford Sunk By Clinical Sudbury

Dimarli Morriosn-Facer reports on the end of Romford’s run in the FA Cup.

Encouraged by their performances in their previous outings Romford flew out the blocks and had the first two chances of the game, with striker Nick Reynolds and midfielder Jamie Dicks both testing Sudbury’s Marcus Garnham early on.

However, it was the home side who took the lead in the fifth minute. Jordan Blackwell’s through ball was narrowly missed by defender Ryan Boswell leaving striker Luke Callender clear on goal. He unselfishly found midfielder Sam Bantick who had a simple tap-in at the far post to make it 1-0.

Off the line

The goal seemed to have a negative effect on the game but with 10 minutes remaining before half-time Romford began to press for a late equaliser. The visitors went close when Will Green went racing down the wing before picking out Mallett who fired just wide.

Reynold then had an effort cleared off the line after being slipped in by midfielder Ayo Olukoga.

Top-scorer Chindu McKenzie then went close after he spun his marker and rifled a shot towards goal. However, the impressive Garnham was on hand to tip his effort wide.

An Olukoga snapshot flew harmlessly over before The Boro came within inches of scoring. McKenzie drove down the right wing , cut in and beat two defenders before sending a left-foot shot which clipped the outside of the post before going wide.

Romford controlled the opening exchanges of the second half and almost equalised when midfielder Jamie Dicks picked out McKenzie who brought the ball down and beat his marker before firing his effort straight at Garnham.

Dictate

Sudbury then went close themselves but Romford’s number one was on hand to parry away Graig Parker’s header.

However, Parker wasn’t to be denied and in the next attack buried his chance from a low cross from the wing.

On the front foot, the Yellows began to dictate the game and in the 85th minute made their pressure count as Parker double his tally by bundling home from close range.

Rob Eagle then added a fourth and final goal as he bent a superb free-kick past the despairing Chafer.
