Standing Up For The Real Danny Dyer

Emma Brand looks beyond the on-screen appearance of East London’s celebrities: (1) Danny Dyer, Esquire.

On TV Danny Dyer seems like the type of guy who would beat you up just for looking at him. But guess what, folks? When he does this, he’s acting. Meanwhile on social media, the East London actor comes across in a very different light.

With 1.18 million followers, Danny is using his Twitter feed to promote neither bar room brawls nor even himself, but Sport Relief.

Instead of being thuggish, some of his Tweets suggest he is positively tender (in a tough sort of way): “Just watched Ratatouille with the littl’un… fuck me I was rooting for that rat.” And he certainly has a funny side. Buzzfeed and Mashable have named him the funniest British person on Twitter.

But lately he has been talking less about films and family fun, and more about his recent trip to Sierra Leone for Sport Relief: “Can’t possibly describe what I’ve seen today. Please tune in to @SportRelief on 18th March to see for yourself ♯SR16.”

Danny has also been replying to other people’s Tweets to him with a fair amount of sass. “If you wanna attack me man that no one fears surely you can do better than that. Have another try my love.”

His Facebook page, with 821,000 Likes, also features Sport Relief….and the inevitable EastEnders.
