Teddy Not Ready

Teddy Sheringham

Robert Wheeler spoke to former Hammer Teddy Sheringham about his managerial plans – and if he will resume his playing career.

At Rush Green stadium on a damp Monday November evening, there was an interested spectator for a development squad game between West Ham and Derby County’s U21 sides. Keeping a close eye on the young West Ham talent was former Hammer and Attacking Coach, Teddy Sheringham.

So, was the current Stevenage manager interested in any of West Ham’s U21 players specifically to take on loan? “Yes I’m thinking about it,” was all he would say.

With Stevenage currently in 20th position in League 2, a player Sheringham could have his eye be looking at is striker Elliot Lee who worked with Sheringham at West Ham last season. Lee, who is now 20 years old and not yet able to break through into the West Ham senior team could benefit from a loan spell at a club like Stevenage especially if he can play under one of the greatest strikers to play in the Premier League.

Despite registering himself as a player earlier this month, 49-year-old Sheringham confirmed he would not be playing again, which will disappoint many fans.

In the U21s match itself, West Ham started brilliantly and after just seven minutes 16- year-old Reece Oxford won a penalty which Lee fired in.

Josh Cullen then made it 2-o tapping in the rebound from a Marcus Browne shot.

Derby pulled one back through Callum Guy. Before Elliot Lee made it 3-1 with a superb header off a Djair Parfitt-Williams cross.

Ivan Calero set up a nervy final minutes after his goal made it 3-2. However the Hammers managed to hold onto their lead and secure the win. Club legend Julian Dicks was also watching from the stands with former ladies captain Stacey Little.
