‘The Worst We Have Played’ – Daggers’ Boss Wayne Burnett

Martin Voller hears the Dagenham & Redbridge manager let rip.

His team may have picked up all three points against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday 30th November, but manager Wayne Burnett was enraged by the Daggers’ ‘pathetic’ performance at Victoria Road.

The win, courtesy of Afolabi Obafemi’s first half strike and Rhys Murphy’s penalty shortly after half time, moved the East London outfit to within two points of the play-offs.

But despite being a man light after Wycombe defender Anthony Stewart was sent off for the challenge which led to Murphy’s penalty, the Wanderers were far more dangerous in front of goal than the hosts.

Burnett, who has been in charge of the Daggers for seven months, said afterwards: ‘I am delighted that we have won, absolutely. It’s no disrespect to Wycombe but it’s the worst we have played since I have been manager at this football club.

‘We have set standards here and they weren’t met today. Wycombe went down to 10 men and they were a better team than us. It’s not acceptable.’

Burnett added: ‘I thought it was a reasonably tight game and in the first half they probably had one or two better chances than us, but we have gone in 1-0 up. I was reasonably happy that we hadn’t played particularly well but went in at half time in front.’

But in the second half, he went on, ‘we looked nervous, we looked panicky – like nobody wanted to spend time on the ball, and that’s so unlike us.

‘If we play like that,’ Burnett suggested, ‘we won’t win many games this season.

‘You can probably sense my frustration,’ he concluded.
