Tube Strike Draws A Red Line Through Football Fixtures?

Tom Reeves fears disruption off the pitch.

This week’s London Underground strike is jeopardising sporting fixtures throughout the capital, including Wednesday’s Barclay Premier League clash between Liverpool and Fulham.

Fulham have stated that ‘the Club is currently proceeding on the basis that the game will go ahead’. But a further statement, which may reverse this position, is due to be issued later this afternoon (Tuesday) – hours before the two-day strike is set to start.

Fulham’s Craven Cottage ground will be extremely difficult to access if Underground lines through Central London are shut down, as they were during last week’s Tube strike.

If the strike continues and the game goes ahead, it would be played in a largely empty stadium. But safety issues are also involved.

Fulham has voiced ‘concerns over the potential impact that the strike may have on the ability of safety staff to attend the ground in sufficient time and numbers.’

Without staff in place to meet the terms of the club’s safety certificate, the club would be legally obliged to postpone the fixture.

Arsenal’s game against Manchester United, also on Wednesday evening, is subject to similar considerations.

The Tube strike was called off a few hours after this piece was published.
