Twitter Mania As Passengers Told: ‘Get Off And Walk’

Martin Voller reports on a new episode in Greater Anglia’s Comedy of Errors.

Passengers tweeted that Greater Anglia is a ‘joke’ and a ‘disgrace’ yesterday, after they were asked to ‘get off the train and walk’ due to a faulty door.

The morning commute isn’t pleasant at the best of times, but for passengers on the 8am Shenfield to Liverpool Street, the ‘service’ plunged to an all-time low.

There had been signaling problems between Ilford and Seven Kings; because of this the train called at additional station stops; and then, to make matters worse, it was terminated at Maryland when a door failed to shut properly

Passengers were forced to vacate the train. Staff directed them to walk to the nearest station, Stratford.

Commuters are familiar with the announcement, ‘Greater Anglia apologises for the late running of this service’. A late running train is one thing, but the last thing any passenger expects when they get on, is to be asked to get off and walk.

My fellow passengers turned to Twitter to express their surprise and voice their frustration.

Luke Baker didn’t hold back, tweeting: ‘Absolute disgrace! Thrown off the train at Maryland and told to walk to Stratford!’

‘Chris I’ tweeted: ‘2hrs to do a journey that usually takes 45mins. It’s quicker, easier and nicer to commute from South Yorkshire. ‪@greateranglia you are a joke!’

Some managed to see the funny side, including Graham Archer who tweeted: ‘‪@greateranglia have you got a spare pen? Been at Maryland so long I have to fill in a council tax and rent form!’

According to their website, Greater Anglia’s mission statement is ‘to provide you with a reliable and efficient train service’. It’s fair to say that yesterday’s 8am from Shenfield did not fulfil their mission.
