Two-time Champs Press For Another Title

As the BUCS basketball season nears its midway point, Jahin Shamsuddin takes a look at how the season has unfolded so far for two-time defending BUCS South Premier champions UEL Men’s Basketball.

It has been a brilliant start for UEL 1st team this season as they are currently sitting in third place in the BUCS Premier South. Their record stands at three wins and one loss, with that defeat coming in the opening game of the season against Southampton Solent.

Hot Streak

Since their defeat against Southampton, UEL have won three games in a row. They defeated the University of Bath by a comfortable margin, 122-92, and then defeated the University of the West of England (UWE), 81-46. In their last match up they won 80-73 against Oxford University.

UEL are currently a game behind Oxford in the table as East London have played one less fixture. UEL were scheduled to play Brunel University on 9 November, but following a benches-clearing brawl in the third quarter with UEL leading 51-36, the match was abandoned. As of publication, there was no word as to whether the match will be rescheduled.

But even with Oxford in first place right now, the defeat UEL inflicted on Oxford will give the team a huge boost in confidence and right now East London are looking like a team who cannot be beaten.

Southampton Test

On Wednesday, 16 November, UEL will host Southampton in what will be their second matchup this season after that opening fixture loss in a game that was closely contested. This is going to be an important game for UEL as they look to get their revenge.

A win for UEL will also put them in a comfortable position at the top of the table. Looking ahead on the fixture list, they then have two relatively easy games against Bath, who have lost all their games this season, and UWE, who have lost four games, with their only victory coming against Bath.

So for defending champions UEL, it has been a brilliant season so far and they will look to continue that when they face Southampton next week at 4pm at the SportsDock.
