UEL are without a win so far this season and currently sit fifth in the Men’s South Eastern 4B division.

They face an unbeaten Greenwich side, but joint captain Sam McGrath and winger Robert Wheeler insists that their UEL side have shown signs of improvement.

McGrath explained how the side have had to step up they preparation after having a two week break since their last fixture.

“We’ve intensified training, increasing the amount of fitness we do along with stick control and different attacking and defensive plays.”

Optimistic

In their previous match UEL threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with King’s College London’s Third Team. Despite the disappointing collapse, McGrath saw this game as a positive result.

“The game two weeks ago was a gutting result and a game we definitely should have won. However, there were a lot of positives to take from that game on an individual-player basis and as a team. So even though it was a draw it was a positive game for the club.”

UEL winger Wheeler added to his captains comments, claiming that the side’s growing-confidence can help them win the next match against Greenwich’s First Team at home.

“There were vast improvements in the two-all last time round, we should have won that. We were gutted not to get the win that day but home against Greenwich, we’ve got our confidence back.”

All to Play For

UEL opponents Greenwich drew 2-2 with King’s College London’s in their previous match and defeated The University of Kent 3-0 in their first league game.

This match will certainly be a stern test for Aoife Smyth’s side, who have conceded 10 goals in their last two games. They currently have the worst defensive record in the division so will need to tighten up at the back if they hope to come away with a result.

UEL will take on their London neighbours at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in Stratford on Wednesday the 2nd November.
