The University of East London Men’s Hockey Team winger netted his first ever goal in Wednesday’s 7-1 defeat at the hands of the University of Greenwich at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre.

UEL’s Wheeler scored the equaliser in the first-half of the match and was obviously thrilled. He suggested that the feat would be a stepping-stone for more goals in the future.

“I was buzzing to have leveled the scores and get my first goal in that stadium. Obviously it being the third game in, it was good to get off the marks and hopefully there will be more to come,” Wheeler said.

However his strike ultimately accounted for very little for as Greenwich eventually ran out comfortable winners.

Positives

“I feel my goal was only a consolation. I think there are lots of positives to take from it onto Chichester next Wednesday,” Wheeler said.

“I think the team did alright and I believe the scoreline was a bit flattering to Greenwich but we cannot accept conceding that many in quick succession.”

UEL Hockey Captain Sam McGrath also had his say on Wheeler’s first goal and he seemed equally pleased for his teammate.

“I was thoroughly pleased for Rob and for the team as it was a good team goal that I was very proud of.”

UEL have the worst defensive record in the Men’s South Eastern 4B division; conceding 17 goals from just three matches and find themselves at the bottom of the league with just one point.

Optimistic

Despite their last result McGrath chose to remain optimistic that they could bounce back from the defeat and bring an end their win-less streak.

“The team have improved considerably and I was proud of the performance and am looking forward to the cup game on Wednesday,” McGrath said.

UEL will take on the University of Chichester’s Second Team at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in Stratford on Wednesday the 9th November.
